David Hunt says... In the fifties I was working with the Glasgow Evening News and was privileged, as part of my job, to go every Monday evening and view the show and go back to the office in Hope Street and write my views on the show.I'm afraid some of my opinions were not favourable. ( Sorry!! ) David

Hi my brother-inlaw was the last page boy in the empire.his job during his many year's in the theatre was dayman He worked back stage. And was known by everyone connected to the theatre. His name was Martin Dowding.I myself started working in the theatre at the age of 14yr's.I worked on the electric's my boss was George Hughes. George lost a leg when the iron-curtain came down on his leg.Iam delighted there is a sight for the number 1 theatre.Kind Regard's John wishart.
My Grandfather and Grandmother (Jack and Peggy Masterton)both played in many orchestras in Glasgow variety circuit.I have what is I'm sure a picture of them at the Empire. As a small child I used to be entertained by the stories they told of their days in theatre and the colourful acts they came across including Laurel and Hardy. Thanks for an interesting website.
i am nearly 18 and i feel sad that this wonderful theatre got knoked down. I wish i was around in those days to see betty hutton, judy garland etc as i love old movie stars from the silent days to the 1950s. I wish i could go back in time. It is a real shame. from glasgow.
Thank you for the memories. My Uncle Bill was a stage hand at the Empire and I was always backstage. The chorus girls always tried to get me to go on stage with them but I was just a wee girl and very shy. Johny Beattie took me on stage in a wheel barrow but I started to cry and they bundled me off!! Sorry Johny! He missed a few cues that night. Where are they all now??.
